Redeemed From the Pit

In Job 33:24–28, Elihu describes how God can rescue a person from the brink of death and destruction, restoring them to righteousness and health. This redemption requires a mediator who proclaims God's way to deliverance.

How beautifully this describes the mediating work of Christ to save us from sin's deadly pit! Jesus explained to Nicodemus, "Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life" (John 3:14–15).

I think of first responders reviving an overdose victim with Narcan, snatching them from the jaws of death. How much more has Jesus rescued believers from the fatal overdose of sin! His atoning blood revives and reconciles the most hopeless cases.

By God's grace, the mediator has spoken wisdom to us: believe on the Savior lifted up for our sins, and you will have eternal life! Now reconciled to the Father, our flesh is made new like a child's (v.25).

O the depth of this gospel grace that rescues us from destruction and clothes us in righteousness! Let our restored lives proclaim the excellence of our compassionate Redeemer.
